Caius Caninius Rebilus
Also known as: Caninius / Caninius Rebilus / Rebilus · Family: Roman · Role: lieutenant · First appears: The Gallic War, Book VII, 83–90
In Book VII of the Gallic War, Caesar sent Caius Caninius Rebilus to the Ruteni with one legion. In Book VIII, Caesar noted that Caninius was responsible for Gaul but did not have enough force to protect it with two legions, and assigned Caius Fabius additional troops. After receiving reports from Duracius, who remained friendly to Rome despite a revolt in part of his state, Caninius marched to Limonum. Dumnacus attacked his camp but, after failing to breach its defenses and losing many men, returned to the siege of Limonum.
Caninius then pursued Drapes and Lucterius with two legions to protect the province. At Uxellodunum he divided his forces among three camps and began to encircle the town. At daybreak his men attacked a grain convoy; its escort was killed, while Lucterius escaped with a few followers. Caninius’s forces later defeated Drapes’s camp and captured him. The next day, Caius Fabius joined Caninius and took responsibility for besieging one side of the town.
