The Myth of Hiawatha, and Other Oral Legends

Kabibonokka

Also known as: Kabebonicca / Kabibboonocca · Role: the North Wind; brother of Manabozho · First appears: Hiawatha; or, Manabozho · Part 2

In Hiawatha; or, Manabozho · Part 2, Kabibonokka is named among the older brothers of Manabozho, and Mudjekewis is his father. Schoolcraft reports in Hiawatha; or, Manabozho · Part 9 that Manabozho withdrew to dwell with his brother in the North.

In Shawondasee, Mudjekewis gave Kabibonokka the North. Manabozho later brought their father to terms and received the Northwest Winds to rule jointly with Kabibonokka. At the plains, Shawondasee mistook the dandelion seed-vessels for a woman; jealous of his brother Kabibonokka, he sighed them away.

In Shingebiss, Kabebonicca sent colder blasts and snow to overcome Shingebiss, then tried to starve him by freezing the fishing openings. That night he entered Shingebiss’s lodge but could not endure his songs and fire. When Shingebiss continued to find fish, Kabebonicca gave up: “I can neither freeze him nor starve him; he is a very singular being--I will let him alone.”
