Tiki

Also known as: our Father / the Father of man · Role: the first man, the father of mankind · First appears: Chapter I · Tiki--The Ancestor of Mankind

In Chapter I · Tiki--The Ancestor of Mankind, after the light shone over Papa-tu-a-nuku, Tiki became the first man. He came to the river at Hawaiki asking how he could become the father of mankind, then journeyed through the ten heavens and found the sacred incantations and Karakias. With their help, he gave life to Marikoriko, the first woman, who became his wife.

Many children were born to Tiki and Marikoriko, including their daughter Hine-kau-ata-ata and their sons the Power of Speech and the Power of Growth. Their descendants included Te-a-io-whaka-tangata, whose children were the Maori children of the world. Chapter II · The Creation of Hawaiki also tells of Tiki as the next son of Rangi and Papa, who created Marikoriko and became the father of man.
