Tacitus: Histories and Annals

Claudius

Also known as: Claudius Caesar · Family: Roman imperial household · Role: priest · First appears: Annals I (15)

In Annals I (15), Claudius was added to the society alongside Tiberius, Drusus, and Germanicus. By Annals III (1), he was identified as Germanicus’s brother and appeared with Drusus and the children of Germanicus who had remained at Rome; the account also presents him as an uncle detained at the palace with Tiberius and Livia.

In Histories I, Scribonianus’s rising against Claudius was quickly crushed, while Magnus was among those executed by him. In Histories III, Cartimandua’s betrayal of Caratacus supplied Claudius with material for his triumph, and Vespasian served under him in Britain; “The deified Claudius accomplished the undertaking” by transporting legions and auxiliary forces there and associating Vespasian with the invasion. In Claudius’ reign, Judaea was made a province governed by Roman knights or freedmen. He was also connected by elder kinship to Mark Antony, who was described as his grandfather.
