The Wars of the Jews

Antiochus Epiphanes (Seleucid king)

Also known as: Antiochus / Antiochus Epiphanes / Epiphanes / the king · Family: Seleucid · Role: king · First appears: Book I, Chapter 1

In Book I, Chapter 1, Antiochus Epiphanes quarreled with Ptolemy VI over the right to Syria, then captured the city, massacred Ptolemy’s supporters, and plundered the temple. Judas (son of Matthias) gathered an army, allied with the Romans, and drove Epiphanes out of the country, while Bacchides served under him, sent to keep the fortresses with “these wicked commands.”

Antiochus later died, and his son Antiochus succeeded him as king and continued his hatred of the Jews. In Book VII, Chapter 3, the account again describes how Antiochus “laid Jerusalem waste, and spoiled the temple,” though those who succeeded him restored the donations made of brass to thejewsofantioch.
