The Song of Roland

Gualter del Hum

Also known as: Gualter / Gualtiers · Family: Franks · Role: count · First appears: Laisses LXI–LXVI

In Laisses LXI–LXVI, Rollant orders Gualter del Hum to place a thousand Franks among the ravines and crags, and Gualter deploys them there. He is Rollant’s man and will not leave him: “I'm Rollant's man, I may not leave him there.” At the ravines and crags, Almaris meets Gualter’s Franks in combat.

In Laisses CLI–CLVI, mortally wounded, Gualter calls Rollant for help, and Rollant rides to him. They renew their fight against the pagans, but Gualter is slain by their first volley. Rollant mourns the loss of his friend; Gualter is also the nephew of Drouin.
