In Adventure XXII, Herrat, a royal child and daughter of King Nentwin, was identified as Dietrich’s betrothed. By Adventure XXXVIII, his liegemen included Wolfhart, Helfrich, Hildebrand, Siegstab, Wolfwin, Wolfbrand and Helmnot; Siegstab was also his sister’s son. Dietrich grieved the death of his friend Rudeger, and called Gotelind—Rudeger’s wife and the daughter of his father’s sister—his cousin.

In Adventure XXXIX, Dietrich said that those who had killed Rudeger had brought him bitter grief. He offered Hagen and his men safe keeping as hostages, but Hagen refused and attacked him. Dietrich defeated and deeply wounded Hagen, bound him, and delivered him to Kriemhild. He then fought Gunther, overcame him despite his valiant defense, and bound him.
