Greek Mythology

Latona

Family: Olympian · Role: goddess · First appears: Apollodorus, Library 1.2

🌐 Also appears in: The Metamorphoses of Ovid (as Latona)

In Apollodorus, Library 1.2, Coeus and Phoebe were Latona’s parents. In Library 1.4, her intrigue with Zeus led Hera to hunt her across the earth. Latona reached Delos, where she gave birth first to Artemis and then, with Artemis’s help, to Apollo: “till she came to Delos and brought forth first Artemis, by the help of whose midwifery she afterwards gave birth to Apollo”.

Not long afterwards at Pytho, Tityus attacked Latona, and she called Apollo and Artemis to her aid; they killed him with their arrows. In Library 3.5, Niobe claimed to be more blessed with children than Latona, making them rivals. Later, at Latona’s intercession, Apollo was ordered to serve a man as a thrall for a year.
