Plutarch's Lives

Pharnabazus

Family: Persia · Role: satrap · First appears: Alcibiades

Pharnabazus was the son of Artabazus. In the affair involving Alcibiades, he entrusted it to his brother Magaeus and his uncle Susamithres; he and Alcibiades were enemies, and, coming to Mindarus’s aid, were utterly defeated. Lysander later became his enemy after pillaging and wasting his country, and induced Spithridates to revolt against him. Pharnabazus also commanded two troops of foreign horse appointed by Eumenes.

Under Artaxerxes, Pharnabazus served as an admiral alongside Conon. At Cnidos, he and Conon led the Persian fleet in defeating Sparta at sea, after which Artaxerxes imposed the Peace of Antalcidas on Greece. Pharnabazus and Conon were friends, while he and Agesilaus were enemies; nonetheless, Agesilaus said, “How much rather had I have so brave a man my friend than mine enemy.” Apollophanes of Cyzicus was the common host of Pharnabazus and Agesilaus, and Artaxerxes promised to give Apama to Pharnabazus as his wife.
