Myths of the Cherokee

the mother (Myth 81)

Role: mother · First appears: Myth 81 · Tsul`kalû', the Slant-Eyed Giant · Part 1

In Myth 81, the mother lived at Kanuga with her daughter, the girl, while her son, the older brother, lived elsewhere. When she saw [[Tsulkalû']] at the âsi, she ran back crying that he looked frightful. After Tsulkalû' gave her daughter a baby girl and asked her to leave with him, the girl said goodbye to her mother and went with him to his home.

When the older brother returned to find his sister gone, he saw his mother lonely and set out to find her. Four years later, the girl told her mother and brother they could see her husband if they came early the next morning. They arrived too late to see Tsul`kalû' and his family, but found the deer meat the girl had promised.
