Myths of the Cherokee

the older brother (Myth 81)

Role: older brother · First appears: Myth 81 · Tsul`kalû', the Slant-Eyed Giant · Part 1

In Myth 81, the older brother lived with his own wife in another settlement. When he heard that the girl had married, he visited her at Kanuga, where the mother told him his sister had left with her child and husband. Sorry to see his mother lonely, he set out to find his sister.

At Tsunegûñ'yi, he found his sister dancing inside the mountain and spoke with her outside. After four years, she told her mother and brother they could see her husband if they came early the next morning, but they arrived after [[Tsulkalû']] and his family had gone; they found the promised deer meat. Later, his sister invited him inside the mountain, where he saw a great townhouse. He returned to Kanuga and told the people they must fast seven days to see Tsulkalû'. On the seventh day a stranger broke the fast and raised the war cry; afterward, when the brother asked to see Tsul`kalû', the voice answered, “Now you can never see me.”
