Greek Mythology

Adonis

Family: gods · Role: son of Cinyras · First appears: Apollodorus, Library 1.3

🌐 Also appears in: The Metamorphoses of Ovid (as Adonis)

Adonis was born when a tree burst open ten months after Smyrna; Cinyras and Metharme are given as his parents, while Hesiod instead names Phoenix and Alphesiboea. Aphrodite hid him in a chest unknown to the gods and entrusted him to Persephone, and she was associated with him as a suitor “whom she had twitted with her love of Adonis.”

His time was divided so that he stayed by himself for one part of the year, with Persephone for another, and with Aphrodite for the remainder. While still a boy, Adonis was wounded and killed by a boar during a hunt through the anger of Artemis.
