In chapter 16, George Wickham described the late Mr. Darcy as “one of the best men that ever breathed, and the truest friend I ever had”. The late Mr. Darcy was also a highly esteemed and intimate, confidential friend of Wickham's father. As George Wickham’s godfather and patron, he was excessively attached to him and bequeathed him the next presentation of the best living in his gift. He was the father of Fitzwilliam Darcy.

In chapter 36, respect for the late Mr. Darcy was said to prevent Fitzwilliam Darcy’s exposure.
