The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle

Malcolm

Also known as: King Malcolm / King Malcolm of Scotland · Family: Scots · Role: king · First appears: A.D. 1067–1069

In 1067, Malcolm sought Margaret’s hand, and her brother Edgar Etheling agreed after Malcolm pressed him. Margaret was received as his wife, though “it was against her will”; in 1074, she and Malcolm welcomed Edgar in Scotland and gave him and his men great presents.

In 1072, Malcolm made peace with William of Normandy, gave hostages, and became his man. In 1079, he led an army into Northumberland, where it plundered and took captives. In 1091, he made peace with William son of William, did homage, and swore to the obedience he had formerly paid to William’s father.

Soon after Malcolm returned home in 1093, Earl Robert of Northumberland and Morel of Barnborough surrounded and slew him. His son Edward son of Malcolm was also slain; Duncan was his son, and Dufenal his brother. His children included Edgar son of Malcolm and Maud, who married in 1100.
