Offa
Family: Mercians · Role: king of the Mercians · First appears: A.D. 722–760
In 755, after Ethelbald was slain at Seckington and Bernred succeeded him, Offa put Bernred to flight and assumed the government of the Mercians. He was the son of Thingferth, and his son Everth held the kingdom for a hundred and forty days. In 775, Offa fought Cynewulf near Bensington and took possession of the town. That year he also freed the monastery of Woking at the request of Brorda, an alderman, for the abbot Pusa and St. Peter.
In 785, Offa appointed Hibbert bishop, and Everth was consecrated king. In 787, Bertric married Offa’s daughter Edburga; Bertric later joined Offa in driving Egbert out of England into France, an event recorded under 836. In 792, Offa commanded that Ethelbert king of the East-Angles be beheaded.
