The Twelve Caesars

Marcus Lepidus

Family: Roman · Role: co-ruler with Augustus · First appears: Augustus 8

After receiving news of Sylla’s death, Julius Caesar abandoned plans to join Marcus Lepidus’s political project despite tempting offers: “he abandoned all thoughts of joining Lepidus, although he received the most tempting offers.” From this time, Marcus Lepidus governed jointly with Augustus and Mark Antony, before the arrangement continued with Augustus and Mark Antony alone.

After Mark Antony’s defeat, Marcus Lepidus received him, acting as his patron and friend. Later, when Augustus summoned him from Africa with twenty legions, Marcus Lepidus claimed the principal management of affairs; Augustus stripped him of his command, spared his life after his submission, and banished him for life to Circeii.

While Marcus Lepidus remained in banishment, Antistius Labeo nominated him in the election of a new senate. He was then described as having formerly been Augustus’s enemy.
