The Twelve Caesars

Sylla

Also known as: Lucius Cornelius Sylla / Lucius Sylla · Family: dictator · Role: dictator · First appears: Julius Caesar 1

At Rome, Sylla opposed Julius Caesar’s refusal to divorce Cornelia. As a result, Julius Caesar lost his priesthood, his wife’s dowry, and his estates before withdrawing from Rome. Sylla was also the grandfather of Pompeia.

Later, Sylla had demolished the victory trophies honoring Caius Marius, which Julius Caesar restored. At Modena, Sylla besieged Decius Brutus in an effort to drive him from the province granted to him by Caesar and confirmed by the senate; this made Sylla odious to Augustus, who joined the nobles after Mark Antony opposed him.

Cornelius Epicadius was Sylla’s freedman and his apparitor in the Augural priesthood. He completed the final book of Sylla’s unfinished Commentaries, while Faustus, Sylla’s son, much loved him.
