Prince Ajātaśatru

Also known as: Ajātaśatru · Family: Magadha · Role: son of King Bimbisāra and Vāsavī · First appears: Chapter VI

In Chapter VI, after nine months, Vāsavī gave birth to Ajātaśatru, whom soothsayers foretold would kill his father and seize sovereignty. Later, “impelled by Devadatta, the friend of vice,” Ajātaśatru killed his father, King Bimbisāra.

After his father’s death, an evil minister brought Bhadrā to Ajātaśatru while he was grieving, and he fell in love with her. When she later reappeared at the palace, he tried to embrace her; she rose into the air by magic, frightening him, and he asked her forgiveness. Earlier, Jīvaka had cured Ajātaśatru’s tumour by provoking his anger.
