Machaerus
Family: Antigonus's party · Role: general · First appears: Book I, Chapter 16
As a general in Antigonus’s party, Machaerus was asked by Antigonus to come to his assistance against Herod, with money promised in return. Machaerus instead “pretended friendship to Antigonus, but came as a spy to discover his affairs”; Antigonus perceived his intentions, expelled him from the city, and defended himself from the walls. Machaerus did not despise Herod, who offered him more money than Antigonus had.
In Book I, Chapter 17, Herod sent Pappus with an army against Samaria, where he opposed Machaerus. Machaerus sent Joseph with him.
