Hermocrates
Family: Syracusans · Role: general · First appears: Book 1, section 1, part 2/2
At the time the Syracusan generals learned that the democratic party had banished them, they remained in command until their successors arrived, yielding to the general demand when no accusation was brought against them. The captains swore to restore the exiled generals on their return to Syracuse. Hermocrates appeared at Lacedaemon as the accuser of Tissaphernes, and his case was supported by Astyochus’s testimony and the apparent sincerity of his statements.
While in exile, Hermocrates received money from Pharnabazus to gather friends and triremes for his eventual recall to Syracuse. He later joined a Lacedaemonian embassy, headed by Pharnabazus, alongside his brother Proxenus.
