John Bromley

Also known as: Iohn Bromley / Iohn Bromley of Bromley in Staffordshire / Iohānes de Bromley / sir Iohn Bromley · Family: England · Role: esquire · First appears: Henry V 8

Around c. 1415 at Corbie, John Bromley of Bromley in Staffordshire, a near kinsman and ally of Hugh Stafford, Lord Bourchier, recaptured the English standard and drove the French from their position. In recognition of this, at Madeley Hugh Stafford, Lord Bourchier granted him a forty-pound annuity for life.

By c. 1418, Henry V rewarded John with forty pounds of land and its inheritance, then knighted him in the field and appointed him captain general of Dampfront, seneschal, and great constable of Bosseuile le Rosse. At Dampfront, he granted Walter Audeley a twenty-pound annual rent from his manor of Bromley, and he received an escutcheon and crest commemorating his recovery of the standard at Corbie. Later, Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick sent John with George Umfreville and a force of archers and soldiers to the Stroo near Cawdebeke; the English defeated the French, killed their captain, and took many prisoners. John was hurt in the face, while Walter Audeley, his kinsman and ally, was severely wounded and maimed in the right arm.
