Born to Henry IV and Mary de Bohun, Henry was the eldest of six children, with Blanche of Lancaster, Duchess of Bavaria, Philippa of Lancaster, Thomas of Lancaster, Duke of Clarence, John of Lancaster, Duke of Bedford, and Humphrey Duke of Gloucester as his siblings. During Richard II’s Irish campaign, Richard knighted him, but later had him imprisoned at Trimme. When Henry IV took the crown, Henry became prince of Wales, duke of Cornwall, earl of Chester, and duke of Aquitaine, and was granted the right to carry the sword Curtana at his father’s coronation. He fought beside Henry IV at Shrewsbury despite being wounded in the face, later fell under his father’s suspicion, and was eventually reconciled with him. In 1413, after Henry IV’s death, Henry assumed the government of England and was proclaimed king; he was crowned on 9 April and banished his former dissolute companions from court.

As king, Henry suppressed the rising led by Roger Acton, John Browne, and John Beverley, while restoring Henry Percy to his lands and earldom. He made Robert Mascall bishop of Hereford and appointed Stephen Patrington and Robert Mascall as confessors at different times. His relations with John Oldcastle, Lord Cobham changed from patronage to opposition when Henry sent him to the Tower over accusations of heresy. Henry also strengthened his family’s positions, creating John of Lancaster, Duke of Bedford, Humphrey Duke of Gloucester, and Thomas Beaufort, Duke of Exeter dukes, while Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick served him in embassies and campaigns.
