Herodias
Role: wife of Herod · First appears: Matthew 14
In Luke 3, John the Baptist reproved Herod the tetrarch for Herodias, who was Philip’s wife. In Mark 6, Herod the tetrarch had married her, and in Matthew 14 he imprisoned John the Baptist because John condemned the taking of Herodias, saying, “It is not lawful for thee to have her.”
At Herod the tetrarch’s birthday, Herodias requested John the Baptist’s head, and he ordered John beheaded in prison. Thus Herodias and John were enemies, while she was married to Philip and to Herod the tetrarch.
