The Mabinogion

Iddawc

Also known as: Iddawc Cordd Prydain / Iddawc the son of Mynyo · Family: Arthur's Court · Role: knight and former messenger · First appears: THE DREAM OF RHONABWY 1

Iddawc, a knight in Arthur’s host and former messenger, identifies himself as Mynyo’s son: “I am Iddawc the son of Mynyo, yet not by my name, but by my nickname am I best known.” At the battle of Camlan, he carried messages between Arthur and Medrawd, but, as a reckless youth eager for battle, provoked them and stirred up strife. Three nights before the battle ended, he abandoned it, went to Llech Las in North Britain, performed penance for seven years, and gained pardon.

In his dealings with Rhonabwy, Kynwrig Vrychgoch, and Cadwgan Vras, Iddawc offered what it was fitting for him to grant and said they would be companions to them as he had been. Rhuvawn Pebyr later asked him for a share of the little men who were with him, and in a subsequent chapter Rhonabwy enquired of Iddawc.
