Bede's Ecclesiastical History

Pope Honorius

Also known as: Bishop Honorius / Honorius · Family: Roman Church · Role: bishop of the Apostolic see · First appears: Book II · Chap. XVII

In c. 627, Pope Honorius sent a pall to Paulinus and letters to Edwin, exhorting the king to persevere in the Christian faith with fatherly encouragement. He also sent palls to Paulinus and Archbishop Honorius, granting them authority to appoint a substitute bishop if either metropolitan died, and sent Archbishop Honorius a pall and letter of ecclesiastical authority.

In 633, Romanus was drowned in the Italian Sea while carrying Justus’s mission to Pope Honorius. In 634, Pope Honorius again granted Archbishop Honorius authority, in the name of Peter, for the surviving archbishop to ordain a replacement for the one who had died. Earlier, he had counselled Birinus to undertake the mission to Britain, where Birinus promised to spread the faith and, at the Pope’s bidding, received episcopal consecration from Asterius.
