The Legends of the Jews, Volume II

Satan

Also known as: Samael · Family: Heaven · Role: tempter · First appears: Satan And Job

Satan, also known as Samael, is a tempter of Heaven and an enemy of Job, whose God-pleasing life had long stirred his hatred. When God granted him power over Job’s possessions, Satan brought down the house where Job’s children were gathered, and the people sacked Job’s house. God later permitted him to afflict Job’s body, but not his soul; Satan smote Job with leprosy, forcing him to sit outside the city on an ash-heap.

Satan eventually admitted that he had been vanquished by Job and went away abashed. God then cast him down from heaven. On the journey with Moses and Zipporah, Satan appeared as a serpent and swallowed Moses to his extremities; Zipporah circumcised their second son and applied the blood to Moses’s feet. At a heavenly command, the serpent spewed Moses out.
