The Twelve Caesars

Domitius

Family: Roman · Role: son · First appears: Nero 4

Domitius was the son of Cneius. He was “afterwards well known as the nominal purchaser of the family property left by Augustus’s will,” obtained triumphal ornaments for his service in the German war, and, as aedile, obliged Lucius Plancus, the censor, to give way to him. During his praetorship and consulship, he made Roman knights and married women act on the stage; after private reprimands failed, Augustus restrained him by a public edict. He also jointly held the consulship with Aulus, the father of Nero Caesar.

While Domitius was married, Agrippina the Younger used her blandishments to allure him to her embraces. His death left her a widow, and Nero lost his father when he was three years old. Nero later “paid likewise the highest honours to the memory of his father Domitius.”
