The Five Books of Moses

Tamar

Role: Er's wife and Judah's daughter-in-law · First appears: Genesis 38

In Genesis 38, Tamar became the wife of Er, when Judah took her as his firstborn son’s wife. Afterward, Judah commanded Tamar to remain a widow at her father’s house until Shelah grew up.

Tamar later received Judah’s signet, bracelets, and staff, and conceived by him. About three months later, she revealed the belongings as proof that Judah had fathered her child; he acknowledged them and said, “She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son.” In the time of her travail, Tamar gave birth to twins: Pharez came out first, followed afterward by Zarah.
