Hero Tales and Legends of the Serbians

the Vizier of Tyoopria

Family: Turks · Role: vizier · First appears: Chapter X · The Captivity and Marriage of Stephan Yakshitch · Part 1

In Chapter X · The Captivity and Marriage of Stephan Yakshitch, the Vizier of Tyoopria freed Stephan Yakshitch’s hands and returned his horse and arms. When the Sultan (who sentenced Stephan Yakshitch) ordered Stephan’s execution, the Vizier pleaded for mercy and secured his release into his custody for ransom; Stephan went with him to Tyoopria.

For a whole year, the Vizier tried to convert Stephan through courtesy and kindness. He offered Stephan his only daughter in marriage and the grand vizierate of Novi Bazar, but Stephan refused to become a Turk. The Vizier then ordered his execution, but the Grand Vizier of Novi Bazar pleaded for Stephan’s life and offered twice his weight in golden ducats. The Vizier accepted his friend’s offer, and Stephan was delivered from death a second time.
