Amos
Family: Israel · Role: prophet · First appears: Amos 7
In Amos 7, God took Amos from following the flock and commissioned him to prophesy to Israel: “And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.” Amos pleaded for Israel, and God relented from the announced grasshopper and fire judgments, but then declared that Israel would no longer be spared and would face destruction.
At Bethel, Amaziah reported Amos to Jeroboam as having conspired against him and ordered Amos to flee to Judah and stop prophesying at Bethel. Amos declared that Jeroboam would die by the sword and Israel would be led captive, and he pronounced judgment on Amaziah, including the deaths of his sons and daughters, the division of his land, and his own death in a polluted land. In Amos 8, God showed Amos a vision of a basket of summer fruit.
