Pausanias' Description of Greece

Creon

Family: Thebes · Role: ruler and regent · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 39

At the time Theseus defeated the Bœotians, Creon ruled Thebes as regent for Laodamas, son of Eteocles, and forbade the burial of the dead. After Adrastus appealed to Theseus, Theseus defeated the Bœotians and buried them at Eleusis.

When Polynices and Eteocles killed each other, the kingdom passed to Laodamas, and Creon, son of Menœceus, ruled as guardian for him. When Polynices and his army came from Argos, Menœceus voluntarily slew himself in accordance with the oracle at Delphi. Creon’s daughters were Henioche and Pyrrha, and Lycomedes was his son.
