Hesiod and Homerica

Amphiphanes

First appears: The Contest of Homer and Hesiod · Part 2

At Oenoe in Locris, Hesiod stayed with Amphiphanes and his brother Ganyetor, sons of Phegeus, unknowingly entering the place named in the oracle. Suspecting him of seducing their sister, Amphiphanes and Ganyetor killed Hesiod and cast his body into the sea between Achaea and Locris.

Fearing their countrymen’s anger, the brothers fled by boat toward Crete. According to Alcidamas, after they had completed half the voyage, Zeus sank them with a thunderbolt. Demodes was also killed by the brothers, Eratosthenes reports.
