Traditions of the Arikara

the other boy (Tale 21)

Family: Village · Role: one of the two boys · First appears: Tale 21 · The Boy Who Befriended the Thunderbirds, and the Serpent · Part 2

In Tale 21, the other boy was carried with the boy who shot the object (Tale 21) to an island after the first boy shot a strange object and a strong wind took them far from home. Near the great water, they met the old woman who hosted the boys (Tale 21), who called them “grandsons,” welcomed them into her lodge, and fed them; they stayed with her for one moon.

The old woman prepared cakes and instructed the boys how to cross the water on the fourth serpent (Tale 21). They rode on the serpent with their cakes of mush, then took a cake and told their “grandfather” to open his mouth.
