Greek Mythology

Hyacinth

First appears: Apollodorus, Library 1.3

In Apollodorus, Library 1.3, Hyacinth is presented as the son of Pierus and Clio. Thamyris, the son of Philammon and Argiope, conceived a passion for him, and later Apollo loved him. Apollo “killed him involuntarily by the cast of a quoit,” making him both Hyacinth’s lover and, through that accidental death, his enemy.

In Library 3.10, Hyacinth is instead named as a son of Amyclas and Diomede, alongside Cynortes, and is again said to have been loved and accidentally killed by Apollo with a quoit. In Library 3.15, he is called the father of Antheis, Aegleis, Lytaea, and Orthaea.
