Greek Mythology

Thamyris

First appears: Apollodorus, Library 1.3

Thamyris was the son of Philammon and the nymph Argiope. He conceived a passion for Hyacinth, becoming his suitor.

Later, Thamyris entered a musical contest against Calliope, Clio, Melpomene, Euterpe, Erato, Terpsichore, Urania, Thalia, and Polymnia, agreeing that victory would grant him the enjoyment of them all, while defeat would cost him whatever they chose to take. “So the Muses got the better of him and bereft him both of his eyes and of his minstrelsy.”
