Shechem
Family: Hivites · Role: son of Hamor · First appears: Genesis 33
Shechem was a Hivite and the son of Hamor. In Genesis 33, Hamor is connected with the parcel of land bought by Jacob. In Genesis 34, Shechem took Dinah, lay with her, and defiled her, then asked Hamor to obtain her as his wife: “Get me this damsel to wife.”
After Simeon and Levi conditioned giving Dinah on the circumcision of every male, all the males among the city’s people were circumcised. On the third day, Simeon and Levi slew Hamor and Shechem with swords: “And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword.” In Numbers 26, Shechem appears in a parent relationship with Gilead, in the listing of the family of the Shechemites.
