Phinehas
Family: Israel · Role: son of Eleazar · First appears: Exodus 6
Phinehas was the son of Eleazar, who took a daughter of Putiel as his wife. In Numbers 25, Phinehas pursued Zimri and Cozbi into the tent and killed them, and the plague among Israel was stopped: “So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.”
God then gave Phinehas a covenant of peace and an everlasting priesthood for his descendants because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for Israel. In Numbers 31, Moses sent Phinehas with Israel’s forces to war against Midian.
