Actæon

Family: Theban · Role: hunter · First appears: Fable 32

Actæon is a Theban hunter, the child of Autonoë and grandson of Cadmus. At Gargaphie, after seeing Diana bathing, he was transformed into a stag: “Threatening no more, she places on his sprinkled head the horns of a lively stag...”

In that form, he fled along the routes where he had hunted, pursued by his own hounds: Melampus, Ichnobates, Pamphagus, Dorcæus, Oribasus, Nebrophonus, Lælaps, Theron, Pterelas, Agre, Hylæus, Nape, Pœmenis, Harpyia, Ladon, Dromas, Canace, Sticte, Tigris, Alce, Leucon, Asbolus, Lacon, Aëllo, Thoüs, Lycisca, Harpalus, Melaneus, Lachne, Labros, Agriodos, Hylactor, Melanchætes, Theridamas, and Oresitrophus. They gathered around him and “tear their master in pieces under the form of an imaginary stag.”
