History of the Kings of Britain

Elidure

Family: Britons · Role: king · First appears: Book III 14–18

Elidure, king of Britain, was elevated to the throne after the nobility deposed his brother Arthgallo. In his government he followed the example of his eldest brother Gorbonian and performed acts of grace; he was afterwards surnamed the pious because of “his commiseration to Arthgallo in distress.” After five years on the throne, he compelled the nobility to reconcile with Arthgallo, and at York surrendered the crown to him, placing it on his brother’s head.

His brothers Vigenius and Peredure then raised an army against him, defeated him, and imprisoned him in the tower at Trinovantum. After seven years, Vigenius died and Peredure succeeded to the whole kingdom; when Peredure was later removed, Elidure was released and restored to the throne for the third time. His successor was Geruntius, his son.
