The Vicomte de Bragelonne

D’Eymeris

Also known as: M. d’Eymeris / MM. d’Eymeris / d'Eymeris / d’Eymeris · Role: farmer of revenue · First appears: Chapter 54

D’Eymeris, a farmer of revenue, was a creature and one of the best friends of Fouquet. In chapter 54, Colbert’s notes named him and Lyodot for death before the Chamber of Justice, and a secret judgment passed the sentence in chapter 55. He was arrested before the sentence became public, “as he was returning from the house of his mistress”; by chapter 57, Colbert had caused both men to be arrested, tried, and condemned to hanging. Abbe Fouquet also said that D’Eymeris owed him eleven hundred livres from their last game of brelan.

In chapter 59, Colbert removed D’Eymeris and Lyodot from the Palais to the donjon at Vincennes by the king’s order. Fouquet and Abbe Fouquet then planned to rescue them and devised a riot to pull them from the gibbets, but in chapter 63 D’Artagnan caused them to be hanged instead of burned. Fouquet gave D’Artagnan D’Eymeris’s diamond in payment for saving him from the harsher punishment; later, Aramis still spoke of “our dear friends, Lyodot and D’Eymeris,” whose deaths D’Artagnan had caused.
