The Wars of the Jews

Trypho

Family: Syrian · Role: tyrant · First appears: Book I, Chapter 2

Trypho was a Syrian tyrant who, in Book I, Chapter 2, served as guardian to Antiochus’s son and plotted against Jonathan, seeking to remove his friends. He captured Jonathan by a ruse as he traveled to Ptolemais, put him in bonds, and marched against the Jews; after Simon drove him away, Trypho, enraged by the defeat, put Jonathan to death.

In Book I, Chapter 27, Herod (son of Antipater and Cypros) brought an assembly against Tero, the captains, and Trypho, who was identified as a barber. The people condemned and killed them by throwing pieces of wood and stones.
