The Peloponnesian War

Phormio

Family: Athenian · Role: general · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 2 · Part 6

Some time after the siege of Potidæa began, Phormio raised works against the Pallene wall, completing the city’s investment. During the same summer, Perdiccas joined him and the Athenians on an expedition against the Chalcidians; at Argos, Phormio and his forces took the city by storm and enslaved the Ambraciots.

The ensuing winter, Phormio commanded twenty Athenian ships stationed at Naupactus. The following summer, Cnemus slipped past him and entered the gulf with his infantry. Phormio later faced Cnemus and Brasidas at sea: before battle, he gathered his dispirited men and encouraged them. In the same summer, Asopius, Phormio’s son, led thirty Athenian ships to the Peloponnese at the Acarnanians’ insistence that their commander be a son or relative of Phormio.
