The Peloponnesian War

Cnemus

Family: Lacedaemonians · Role: admiral · First appears: Book 2 · Chapter 7 · Part 4

During the same summer, Cnemus, admiral of the Lacedaemonian force, ravaged much of Zacynthus; when its inhabitants refused to submit, his force sailed home. Not long after, he slipped past Phormio and entered the gulf with a thousand heavy infantry. Advancing toward Stratus, his force sacked Limnaea, but after its defeat there Cnemus withdrew by night to the river Anapus and recovered his dead under truce the next day.

After the battle, Cnemus arrived at Cyllene with ships from Leucas. The Lacedaemonians sent Timocrates, Brasidas and Lycophron to order preparations for another battle, and the commissioners worked with Cnemus to ready the fleet. As the Peloponnesian ships faced Phormio’s at the Rhia, Cnemus and Brasidas encouraged their men before battle.
