Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy

Also known as: Philip III, Duke of Burgundy / Philip duke of Burgognie / Philip earle Charolois / Philip, Duke of Burgundy / duke Philip / duke Philip of Burgognie / duke of Burgundy · Family: France · Role: nobleman · First appears: Henry V 11

Around 1415, Philip, then Earl of Charolois, lamented the French dead and paid for the burial of thousands at his own expense, while his brothers Anthony, Duke of Brabant and John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy’s other son, John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy? Wait wrong. Need not awkward. Anthony and Nevers relation are siblings but name counterpart listed John? Material says Anthony duke Brabant, earl Nevers another brother, but names only counterpart relation line says Anthony only? We can mention Anthony only. Need not introduce Earl Nevers? Name appears material, allowed. But "his brothers" based source. Fine. He had been fathered by John Fearless, but relation says parent. Around 1420, he joined Henry V and Charles VI in a tripartite truce and swore obedience to Henry V and his successors, declaring, “I Philip duke of Burgognie, for my selfe, and for mine heires, doo here sweare...” Charles VI and Isabella of Bavaria granted him an annual fief, and his marriage to Michelle of Valois was arranged.

In 1423, his sister Anne of Burgundy married John of Lancaster, Duke of Bedford, and Philip renewed alliance with John IV, Duke of Brittany. By about 1429 he served as John of Lancaster, Duke of Bedford’s deputy at Paris; in 1430 he besieged Campiegne with John FitzAlan, Earl of Arundel, William de la Pole, Duke of Suffolk, and John of Luxembourg, Lord of Ligny. Around 1435, he made peace with Charles VII, and later peace and alliance with Charles, Duke of Orléans helped strengthen Charles VII’s side against Henry VI; he also waged sharp war against Louis de Luxembourg, Count of Saint-Pol and arranged Marie of Cleves’s advancement through marriage to Charles, Duke of Orléans.

Philip was the father of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy and Anthony, Bastard of Burgundy, whom he sent as an ambassador to England. Around 1461, he received George Plantagenet, Duke of Clarence and Richard III at Utrecht, where they remained until their brother Edward IV gained the crown. Philip died shortly after, in about 1467.
