Plutarch's Lives

Callippus

Family: Athenian · Role: captain · First appears: Comparison of Timoleon with Aemilius Paulus

Callippus was an Athenian captain and a friend of Dion, serving as “a hired captain of foot under Dion, and came into Sicily with him.” After slaying Dion, he became master of Syracuse and was described as acting “like a perfidious and wicked villain” in hope of gaining command of Sicily.

At Rhegium, distressed and unable to maintain his soldiers, Callippus was killed by Leptines and Polysperchon, reportedly with the same sword by which Dion had been murdered.
