Greek Mythology

Glaucus

Family: Trojan · Role: father of Bellerophon · First appears: Apollodorus, Library 1.9

🌐 Also appears in: The Iliad (as Glaucus) · The Aeneid (as Glaucus) · The Metamorphoses of Ovid (as Glaucus)

As a child, Glaucus fell into a jar of honey while chasing a mouse and drowned. Polyidus found his body through divination, restored him to life with a herb, and taught him divination under compulsion; when Glaucus spat into Polyidus’s mouth, “Glaucus did so and forgot the art of divination.”

The accounts name Sisyphus, Minos, Hippolochus, and Antenor as Glaucus’s father, while Eurymede is named as the mother of his son Bellerophon. In the war, Diomedes recalled the friendship between their fathers and exchanged arms with Glaucus. Ajax son of Telamon later killed Glaucus in a fight over a corpse, while Odysseus and Menelaus rescued him through their armed intervention. Glaucus was also listed among the suitors of Penelope.
