Agilbert
Family: Church · Role: bishop · First appears: Book III · Chap. VII
Agilbert first attached himself to Coinwalch, voluntarily undertaking the ministry of preaching. Recognizing his learning and industry, Coinwalch asked him to accept an episcopal see and remain bishop of his people, which Agilbert did for many years. When Coinwalch later sought his return from Gaul, Agilbert instead sent his nephew, the priest Leutherius, to be ordained as bishop in his stead.
By c. 653, Agilbert was bishop of the West Saxons and a friend of Alchfrid and Wilfrid. At Alchfrid’s request, he ordained Wilfrid priest at his monastery, and at the gathering where the manner of observance was debated, he asked that his disciple speak for him: “I beseech you, let my disciple, the priest Wilfrid, speak in my stead;” He attended with the priest Agatho, and was commanded by Oswy to explain the observance he followed and the authority for it; after the disputation, he returned home.
By c. 664, having left Britain and become bishop of Paris, Agilbert consecrated Wilfrid bishop for Alchfrid and his people at In Compendio. Around c. 705, when Oswy and Wilfrid were in Gaul, Agilbert joined eleven other bishops in consecrating Wilfrid again. In Gaul, he also kindly received and long entertained Theodore.
