Greek Mythology

Agrius

Family: Calydon · Role: father of the sons of Agrius · First appears: Apollodorus, Library 1.7

🌐 Also appears in: The Iliad (as Agrius)

Agrius was a son of Porthaon and Euryte, alongside Oeneus, Alcathous, Melas, and Leucopeus. At Calydon, his sons—Thersites, Onchestus, Prothous, Celeutor, Lycopeus, and Melanippus—“wrested the kingdom from Oeneus and gave it to their father,” then imprisoned and tormented Oeneus.

Agrius was later named among Penelope’s suitors, alongside Medon and Promus. He was also identified as a son born by Circe to Odysseus, together with his siblings Latinus and Telegonus. Diomedes and Alcmaeon eventually came from Argos and killed all the sons of Agrius.
