the hunter (Tale 61)

Family: Arikara · Role: hunter · First appears: Tale 61 · The Generous Scalped-Man and His Betrayer · Part 1

In Tale 61, the hunter stayed in Scalped-Man (Tale 61)’s cave for four days and nights, talking with him until they became friends. Scalped-Man (Tale 61) said he would help the hunter become a great man if he kept secret where he lived. He brought the hunter ponies, which he took home and later drove to the village, and gave him scalps that he displayed on sticks before returning to the village singing war songs.

In Part 2, Scalped-Man (Tale 61) brought more scalps, and the hunter received them. At the village, the hunter became a chief by claiming credit for Scalped-Man (Tale 61)’s achievements. He later invited men to help capture Scalped-Man (Tale 61), saying that this was the person who had helped him obtain ponies and kill people.
