The Legends of the Jews, Volume I

Emtelai

Role: mother · First appears: The Birth Of Abraham

Terah married Emtelai, daughter of Karnabo, and they had Abraham. Around this time she became pregnant; she gave birth to Abraham in a cave and abandoned him there, saying, “May the Lord be with thee, may He not fail thee nor forsake thee.” When she later went looking for him, Abraham revealed himself as the son she had left in the cave and told her to carry a message to Nimrod. She returned to the city and told Terah how she had found their son.

Terah later concealed Emtelai, Abraham, and the child’s nurse in a cave, where Abraham grew up. When Abraham was ten, Emtelai left the cave with him and the nurse, after the king and his servants had forgotten about him.
